I think I’m most familiar with structural and stylistic editing – for writing anyway. Being a student, I suppose, requires that of me. Although, editing and proofreading- the stuff that people tend to think come after writing the actual thing – I don’t feel like I spend a lot of time on them. I do it, but I’m the type of writer that agonizes over every dang word before I type it into my document. I suppose that is also editing… like when someone pauses mid-sentence to select their words with more care.

I feel like I should also mention that this blog feels much less formal and it is not agonizing to write for No Instructions… Just a little awkward, maybe, because I’m awkward. 🥴

Anyway, there are many of facets of editing that I didn’t think of as editing: fact checking, photo research, and so on. My most recent adventures (of course) have been in video editing. I think it’s going along well? My first video was really exciting, while my second video made me want to cry… but overall, it’s been a fun learning experience and (camera issues aside) and I feel like I have improved my skills.

I’ve also been making an effort to keep my videos on the shorter side because I felt the first one was too long 😪- especially with being unable to show a lot of what was actually happening. It’s hard to maintain an outsider’s view on the length of my videos and what to include because I know how much time and effort has gone into making the content. My boyfriend and roommate, who are often the first to watch my videos, are very supportive and kind, so they’re always very courteous and watch the videos all the way to the end. In the end, I am not sure of how the completed content feels to people, but I figure short and sweet is always good! Learning a little more about analytics would give me a better idea of how my videos are being received.

I think I mentioned previously that I am just using iMovie. It’s pretty basic and doesn’t offer the most flexibility and options, but I think I’ve finally gotten the hang of it. It’s enough for my current purposes, but I can see it being too limiting – maybe frustratingly so – in the long term. If I continue creating content for this blog beyond PUB101, I would definitely consider buying better software to edit on… and utilizing some better camera and media storage equipment. :’)
